Motorcycle, RV and vehicle title inspection

Vehicle inspections are undertaken to match the vehicle identification number (VIN) to the vehicle ownership documents. It helps in determining the identity of the vehicle, and in some cases, also to verify if the vehicle is suitable and well equipped for highway use.

Level 1 vehicle inspection

Level 1 inspections are required at MVD offices or by designated law enforcement officers for requests related to titles. Whether it is a bonded title or an out-of-state or out-of-country vehicle without proof of title, it will need a Level 1 inspection. The MVD may require one in cases including, but not limited to:

  • Title only. To put a vehicle title in your name without obtaining registration, you need a Level One inspection on the vehicle.
  • Bonded title. If you purchased a vehicle or mobile home without proper ownership documents, or lost the title before you could transfer it into your name, you will need to obtain a title through the bonded title process. The first step is a Level One inspection.
  • Abandoned vehicles. An abandoned vehicle, by law, is one abandoned on the property for more than 10 days and not claimed. You must be the owner of the property to apply for the abandoned vehicle title, and a Level One inspection is required.

Need an inspection, but can’t bring the vehicle to us? Let us come to you instead. Use the form below and choose Level 1 Inspection Offsite, or call us and we will arrange it.

Level 2 and Level 3 inspections

Level 2 or 3 inspections cannot be completed by our office. They are done by a peace officer, by appointment only, at ADOT inspection locations.

A Level 2 inspection is conducted when the situation indicates that secondary VINs should be verified. In some cases, a review at a later date may indicate that a Level 3 inspection is required.

Level 3 is the highest level inspection. It is necessary when the vehicle is restored salvage, a recovered stolen vehicle, or has been involved in a crash, and it verifies all major component parts, like the front-end and rear-end assembly, engine and transmission. It also helps determine if the vehicle is equipped for highway use.

Depending on the situation, our staff can help you determine what level of inspection your vehicle requires. Contact us to book your Level 1 inspection.

What do I need to bring to a Level One vehicle inspection in Tucson?

Three things: proof of ownership (the title, registration details or a bill of sale), the valid driver license of the driver or owner, and receipts for any component parts that have been repaired or replaced.

Can you do a Level 2 or Level 3 inspection?

No. ADOT allows Level I inspections at any MVD or authorized third-party provider, which is us. Level II and Level III are conducted only at specific state inspection locations, and only by appointment. We do Level One here or off-site at your vehicle.

What if the vehicle will not move?

We come to you. Off-site Level One inspections are one of the things that separate us from most third party offices. Call and we will arrange it.

When does the MVD require a Level One inspection?

The common cases are title-only (a title in your name without registration), the bonded title process, an abandoned vehicle title, and some out-of-state or out-of-country vehicles without proof of title.
